[TID-BITS] : FACE TO FACE WITH THE ISSUE
…stuck…procrastinating…{now} unavoidable.
Wednesday. “when I sat down to tackle it, in the moment, realized what the solution was.”
- issue (problem)
- rather than {…} disallow users from taking an action {…} require that they make a conscious effort to TAKE the action
- reframing = think on the other side = alternate solutions
What triggers me to think strategically? Immersing myself in the environment (i.e. looking at the code and the front end of the website).
Why is this realization important?
- It means that when faced with a problem, if/when possible, its best to go to the source and LOOK at the components I’m working with
- It confirms that I’m a hands-on involved learner
- It’s a way to “exit” “hamster wheel thinking” which happens when I have “free” brain space, such as while driving or grocery shopping
Pre-work?
That all said, I do wonder how much “pre-work” thinking through the possible options and solutions helps prepare me mentally to “see” the alternative when the problem was actually in front of me. Dones thinking through the problem beforehand help me “weed out” all the things that wouldn’t work? Did something at the grocery store trigger alternate thinking patterns? Was I recalling something I saw on the road that helped be “flip” the requirements to come to the idea I ended up implementing?
The good news is that I’m always thinking, so any “pre-work” I’m doing will continue to happen. What is helpful from this realization is knowing that, when I am tempted to procrastinate something, I should try immersing myself in the actual issue to see if the answer “pop’s out”.
If not, maybe it just hasn’t “baked” long enough in in head yet…
Thoughts from reading (Cracking Creativity, pp 19-50)
- Looking at problems from the perspective of the other gender, another generation, etc.
- Ways to physically change perspective:
- Closing one eye
- Sit on the other side of the room
- Flip the “problem” upside down, or turn it to the side
- Go for a walk
- Personification of the issue: how does it view me/the world; what color is it; where does it buy its groceries; who would it vote for etc.
- Childhood curiosity: Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
